Customer Story 02: Supaja Provides Reliable Online Learning to Students in 33 Countries with Pagecall and AWS

Executive Summary

Supaja—a South Korea–based online tutoring platform—uses the AWS Partner Pagecall audio, video, and whiteboard solution to deliver virtual learning to students in 33 countries. Pagecall, which runs on Amazon Web Services (AWS) services including Amazon EC2, AWS Fargate, Amazon S3, and Amazon DynamoDB, helps Supaja deliver reliable, real-time learning while growing its business to 2 billion KRW in revenue.

Delivering Online Education Across the Globe

Supaja is a one-to-one tutoring platform that connects Korean teachers with students through an automated matching system and provides a range of online educational programs in 33 countries around the world. The company serves disadvantaged individuals through corporate and individual donations and is a Certified B Corp, a designation given to companies for their social sustainability and environmental performance standards.

As an automated matching platform, Supaja requires reliable technology to ensure real-time classroom instruction and monitoring. Kyunghee Park, chief service officer at Supaja, says, “We connect students to teachers and allow them to meet anytime, anywhere. This necessitates a highly available service with low latency at all times.” The company also needed a solution that automatically calculates instructor-specific pay rates, accurately tracking payments based on classroom session durations. Additionally, as a small business with only 10 employees, Supaja needed to prioritize scalability to support rapid growth.

Providing Audio, Video, and Whiteboard Interactions with Pagecall on AWS

Supaja opted to engage Pagecall, an AWS Partner that provides a software as a service (SaaS) solution that features real-time audio, video, and whiteboard interactions for seamless online interactive communication. “We considered systems from many other vendors, but Pagecall was the most suitable because of its real-time capabilities,” says Kyunghee.

The Pagecall solution uses Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud (Amazon EC2), AWS Fargate, and AWS Lambda for compute resources, as well as AWS CloudFormation and AWS Elastic Beanstalk to deploy and manage applications. Pagecall relies on Amazon Simple Storage Service (Amazon S3) and Amazon Elastic File System (Amazon EFS) for application data storage, and Amazon ElastiCache and Amazon DynamoDB for database management.

The solution, optimized for tablets, offers an interactive whiteboard that facilitates notetaking alongside instruction, syncing audio and video to lesson materials and annotations for up to 50 users. Pagecall also provides diverse data sets to support the client’s needs, facilitating faster automation of Supaja’s systems. For example, the solution automatically delivers real-time data on class duration and attendance, which is essential for calculating instructor pay rates. Other automated insights include tracking how frequently a student responds to a teacher or raises their hand for a question during their virtual one-to-one session.

A key design feature of Pagecall is its reliability. Charmy Park, business manager at Pagecall, says, “We’ve accumulated approximately 200 million minutes of usage time, which has helped us deliver a stable service to customers like Supaja. This isn’t consistently the case with other whiteboard solutions.” In addition, the close working relationship between Supaja and Pagecall has directly led to new solution features such as palm rejection, which helps the whiteboard to only accept stylus inputs. “When we requested the palm rejection feature, Pagecall delivered by adding the feature to the solution in just about a month,” says Kyunghee.

Delivering Reliable Real-Time Instructions Virtually

By using Pagecall on AWS, Supaja offers real-time classroom instructions and monitoring, ensuring a reliable virtual classroom experience for instructors and students. “Delays in audio, video, and whiteboard sync are frustrating for anyone—let alone in a class where you rely on instructions and annotations for 60 minutes or longer at a time,” Charmy says. “We helped Supaja avoid that problem. We’ve focused on perfecting our whiteboard technology on AWS over the years, so student-teacher interactions are seamless and there are no latency issues during a classroom session.”

Growing to KRW 2 Billion in Revenue

With low-latency online instruction delivery and technical support from Pagecall, Supaja has grown its business to 2 billion South Korean Won (KRW) in revenue while maintaining its team of less than 10 people. “By using Pagecall on AWS, we’ve grown our business by 2 billion South Korean Won, freeing us from diverting our technical resources to build our own application platform. This gives us the opportunity to focus on business growth,” Kyunghee says. “This also sets us apart from other online education providers by providing a complete audio, video, and whiteboard experience.”

Pagecall continues to work with partners like Supaja to deliver new functionality within the solution, such as a recently added content library feature where users can easily upload and track educational materials for use in the classroom. Pagecall is also exploring the use of generative artificial intelligence (AI). “Our five-year roadmap includes an AI feature that will offer automated audio and whiteboard feedback when students ask questions or solve problems. This is the next phase of interactive learning,” says Charmy. “We're able to stay on top of industry trends thanks to innovators like Supaja who inspire us to develop features that are most relevant to education today.”
